The Society

Sixty years at table

The International Wine and Food Society of Singapore was founded in 1965 as the Singapore branch of the world's oldest gastronomic society, established in London in 1933 by André Simon. We are a society of members who gather through the year to share fine wine, good food and better company. Our cellar of carefully aged wines, professionally stored in Singapore, anchors our dinners. Membership is by introduction.

The Lineage

The oldest table in the world

In London in 1933, André Simon founded The International Wine and Food Society, the first and oldest gastronomic society in the world. It grew into a fellowship of some 130 branches across six continents, bound by a shared conviction that a well kept table is one of civilisation's quiet achievements. The Society in Singapore was born of that fellowship, and has kept its table since 1965.

The Cellar

A duty written into our Constitution

Our Constitution charges the Committee to build, whenever possible, a comprehensive cellar of wines for the use of the Society. Six decades of committees have kept that charge. The result is a cellar of more than two thousand bottles, professionally kept in a temperature controlled bonded warehouse in Singapore, with vintages reaching back across five decades. It is a cellar with one purpose: nothing in it is traded, and everything in it is destined for the Society's table, opened when its moment arrives.

The wines poured at our last dinner appear below, drawn as ever from the Society cellar.

Membership

The way to our table

Membership is by introduction, and it begins at dinner. A prospective member joins us first as a guest of a member, customarily at two dinners, so that the Society and its guest may take each other's measure at the table, where it matters. Thereafter a member proposes and another seconds, the name is submitted to the Honorary Secretary, and election rests at the absolute discretion of the Committee. The Society is limited by its Constitution to 250 members.

The Society has been registered in Singapore since 1965 and is governed by its Constitution: an honorary committee, elected each year at the Annual General Meeting, serves the members. The Constitution is provided to every member on election.
